The City of Cape Town is now offering card payment facilities for motor vehicle registration services at its Fish Hoek civic centre offices.
The other facilities at the Fish Hoek civic centre for the payment of rates and tariff accounts, building plan and land use applications, traffic fines and payments at the drivers’ licence section will still be on a cash only basis.
The City said in a press release that paying by card at these areas would “take a bit longer as system upgrades are required”.
The change to a card for the motor vehicle registration services follows a recent successful pilot roll-out of this service at the Cape Town Civic Centre.
The City will accept payments of up to R5 000 a transaction by credit or debit card, or any other means of payment which does not hold any cost implications for the client. The City said that this amount covered most transactions and they would reclaim the relevant banking fee for any payment over R5 000.
“Clients are thus encouraged to make electronic payments for large transactions with the City, as this will result in minimal bank re-claims of banking charges. Electronic (EFT) payments carry the lowest bank charges. Currently, more than 60% of payments to the City are via EFT payments,” said deputy mayor Ian Neilson.
