Bench in memory of Wesley Sweetnam

The new bench for Wesley Sweetnam.

A bench made out of 1 000 eco bricks was put up at the Noordhoek Beach car park on Friday February 28 in memory of murdered resident Wesley Sweetnam, 30.

It was an initiative by Project Noordhoeked, and the eco bricks were filled by Noordhoek residents.

Project Noordhoeked manager, Karoline Hanks, said it replaced an old broken bench and was part of Project Noordhoeked’s ongoing efforts to keep Noordhoek clean and create awareness about the effects of single-use plastic.

Other waste-management projects at the beach are dog-poop compost bins and a wire whale named Kakapo that is being used to collect plastics and rubbish from the shores of Noordhoek Beach.

The ribbon was cut by Greg Balfour who sponsored the build of the bench

Mr Sweetnam was shot and killed in his home during an armed robbery last year on Sunday morning November 3 (“Noordhoek murder shock,” Echo November 8, 2019).
