A bodyboarder was assisted back to shore by a law enforcement marine unit officer and an unidentified surfer at the Kalk Bay reef yesterday.
The officer noticed a person in the water, who at first glance, looked like a suspected poacher.
When he drifted in among the kelp, the officer realised he was a bodyboarder who was in trouble.
The officer, in his full uniform, entered the water. He was then joined by a surfer.
The two managed to retrieve the man, who by then was pounded among the rocks by the heavy surf.
The bodyboarder sustained serious multiple injuries from his ordeal in the water.
He was transported to Fish Hoek Hospital.
