Covid-19 has claimed it’s first two victims in South Africa.
The country awoke to the news on day one the national 21-day lockdown.
While reports have indicated that some businesses are trading as usual in parts of Cape Town, streets and shopping outlets in the far south were empty.
While there was some movement on Fish Hoek Main Road before noon, there were few pedestrians out and businesses were closed, and while supermarkets were open, there was little movement at Shoprite Checkers were people had queued for hours the previous day.
The play area at Valyland centre in Fish Hoek was deserted apart from a few customers inside Spar.
A few cars could be seen at the four-way stop in Kommetjie Road en route to Masiphumelele. While there was less movement than usual in Masiphumelele, some residents were out and about while others were gathered in groups at Foodzone.
Apart from a few cars, the entrance to Ocean View was also deserted and no residents could be seen there.
Cape Town mayor Dan Plato expressed his disappointment with communities that are ignoring the lockdown and urged people to stay indoors.
“I want to make this clear: anyone who thinks this is business as usual is putting everyone else’s life at risk. It may take days before you show symptoms, so while you think you don’t have the virus, or can’t get the virus, you are wrong. Not only could you have the virus without knowing it, but you could be spreading it to hundreds of others who could die as a result,” he said.
