Twelve-year-old Kierra de Villiers, of Valhalla Park, drowned at the Glencairn tidal pool on Sunday February 7.
Kierra went to the beach on Sunday with 27 friends and family members, a mix of adults and children.
When they took a break to get something to eat from their car, they noticed she was missing, and they went looking for her.
She found at the bottom of the tidal pool, at about 4pm, and pulled out by members within her friend and family group.
Simon’ Town police spokesman Warrant Officer Marius Voges said the alarm was raised and CPR was done on her until the paramedics arrived and took over.
NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said paramedics failed to resuscitate Kierra and she was declared dead at the scene.
The NSRI appealed to the public to be cautious in and around coastal and inland waters.
“Only swim at beaches protected by lifeguards, and children should have responsible adult supervision in and around water,” he said.
It was the first drowning in the Glencairn tidal pool in “many years”, said Warrant Officer Voges.
