The man who raped and killed Ocean View teenager Cameron Britz, 14, has been handed a 30-year jail term. Yagyah Rubain, 20, Cameron’s cousin, learnt his fate in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday August 14.
Magistrate Yasmin Shanaaz Meer gave him 20 years for rape and another 20 years for murder. Ten years of the rape sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence, meaning he will serve an effective 30 years behind bars.
Cameron’s body was found in an open field in Ocean View on Sunday July 2 last year.
She had last been seen alive the previous night, at around 10pm, when Rubain had lured her away from a fire she’d been standing next to.
Rubain handed himself over to the police after residents identified him as the last person to have been seen with Cameron.
Ocean View station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Monwabisi Buzwayo welcomed the sentence.
“The sentence handed out to the perpetrator indicates that justice
has been served. Credit must be given to the investigating team, prosecutors, the first responders at the crime scene, forensic experts and all those involved in securing a watertight case against the accused,” he said.
“It can never be business as usual when a young member of a
family is so violently removed from their loved ones. We hope the
sentence will discourage lawlessness in all its forms.”
