January 2 was hardly Tweede Nuwe Jaar for the residents who volunteered to clean up Muizenberg’s beaches after the previous day’s festivities. At 7am, residents pulled up in bakkies with gloves, rakes and gritty determination. They joined the City of Cape Town’s team of workers, which had been hard at it since 4.30am but still faced a mountain of rubbish. The clean-up was organised by Muizenberg Improvement District and an eco-friendly group called Environmental Warriors and was responded to with gusto by residents. Reporter KAREN KOTZE captured the aftermath.
