Family members and friends of the late Keeno Petersen-Abib, who jumped from a moving train last year, celebrated his life on Saturday February 2 at the place of his death in Lakeside.
The 19-year-old from Sharedon Park, Steenberg, was on the train between Lakeside and False Bay with three other passengers on January 13 when he jumped from the train to escape a robbery. He died on the tracks.
Eyewitnesses said he was approached by three men, one of whom had a gun, (“Call for tighter railway watch after robbery,” Echo, January 18, 2018).
His mother, Shamese Abib has since decided to take on the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and its subsidiary Metrorail for the death of her son after it came to light that
the doors of the train had been open on the day of the incident which is a criminal offence following a Constitutional Court judgment in 2015 after a young man was attacked and thrown from a moving train, (“Mom takes on Prasa,” Echo, February 22, 2018). Ms Abib said the memorial was a celebration of Keeno’s life and an opportunity for family and friends to get together and remember him.
