Ubuntu Football Academy found themselves in arguably one of the toughest groups at this year’s under-19 Bayhill Premier Cup, which kicked off at Erica Park in Belhar on Wednesday March 27.
The Fish Hoek-based side got their campaign off like a house on fire, beating Westridge FC 9-0 in their opening group stage fixture, which was also the first game of the tournament.
The Mitchell’s Plain side, who made their return to the tournament after 21 years, came up against an Ubuntu side bristling with confidence, in a match in which Westridge coach Clifford Engelbrecht described the boys in red as playing on “another level”.
However, things went downhill from there, as Ubuntu lost 2-1 and 1-0, respectively, against Safa Cape Town Academy and Cape Town City in their remaining group stage matches.
Ubuntu redeemed themselves in the plate section quarter-finals, beating Celtic United Academy 4-0 but ultimately went down on penalties against hosts Bayhill United in the plate semi-finals.
A talented side with so much potential, coach Kristopher Bergman has nothing but praise for the youngsters.
“Its been rewarding witnessing our boys grow holistically and become not only talented footballers but leaders in their communities and teams they’ve moved on to,” he said.
Cape Town Spurs faced FN Rangers St Agnes in the final of this year’s Bayhill Premier Cup played at Athlone Stadium, on Monday April 1. Cape Town Spurs emerged victorious. The final score was 4-1.
