The Waterfront Theatre College showcases their musical theatre department with a new production, Broadway or Bust, at the Masque Theatre Muizenburg from Wednesday August 24 to Saturday September 3.
Conceived by Garth Tavares, Broadway or Bust is a musical theatre revue featuring a myriad showstoppers from classical Broadway hits such as Annie, Get your Gun, Hair, Sweet Charity and Cats to more recent successes such as Jersey Boys, The Addams Family, 9 to 5 and Matilda.
“A revue is the ideal way to showcase the range of skills possessed by our student body,” explained college director Delia Sainsbury. “The eclectic range of material featured in the show allows a more diverse demonstration of each individual’s unique talent.”
Many of the extracts included in the show are stand-alone pieces and offer value even if the audience is not familiar with the original context.
“Featuring a cast of 100 students, the show rivals Ben-Hur,” quipped Garth Tavares. “It has taken six months to put together with students being actively involved in the creative process both on and off stage, from the painting of sets, to the making of puppets to the singing, dancing and acting – the students have truly seen the grit behind the glitz!”
Broadway or Bust is directed by Garth Tavares who also does the musical direction and choreography. Costume designs are by Delia Sainsbury and decor is facilitated by Deon Bisschoff.
In addition to highlighting the best of the college’s musical theatre faculty, Broadway or Bust is a fund-raising event for the Waterfront Theatre College Bursary Fund. This fund helps to support young artists who may not have the resources to access further training. All proceeds from the show go to funding a future generation of theatre practitioners.
Shows are at 7.30pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays with an additional 2.30pm show on Saturdays. Tickets are R120 with stu- dent and pensioner rates being R100. Tickets available at www.waterfronttheatreschool. co.za or http://tickets.tixsa.co.za/ events/21056.
