Simon’s Town police have warned of an increase in fraud-related crime, and police chief Captain Vishnu Pillay is warning the public to not divulge PIN codes, ID numbers, one time pins (OTP) and other personal information over the phone.
When receiving a call from the bank requesting such information, rather hang up and contact your bank directly or visit your nearest branch.
No financial institution will ever request personal information from you by SMS or email.
When making EFT payments, ensure that banking details are verified with the supplier and be wary of suspicious emails or SMSes referring to parcel delivery, competitions or vouchers.
