Jacob Beute, Muizenberg
Our shortish street, Ventnor North, borders the Muizenberg High School grounds. The sidewalk is not paved and moles are a real problem.
Almost weekly, a team of contracted street cleaners comes to scoop up the sand accumulated at the kerb. It is then placed into scores of large, blue bags. We see these sparsely filled bags everywhere.
My contention is that this is mostly a waste of plastic bags and effort.
The little bits of sand and any tree debris need merely to be scooped back onto the sandy sidewalk.
Globally our soils, seas and waterways are over-infested with macro and micro plastics. Plastic pollution is now becoming a world threat with micro plastics even invading food and tissue.
Please, no bags are needed here and therefore there is no need to traffic them away to be dumped.
More bags, more contract money?
Mayoral committee member for urban mobility Rob Quintas, responds: The City’s road infrastructure management district office in the area is not aware of this request. The team will conduct a site inspection at this location to determine the necessary action required.
