Johann Kikillus, Kommetjie
For the past three months, Kommetjie has been battling with a waste removal and baboon problem.
Our waste was always collected on Tuesdays. Now most weeks we have to keep our bins out and waste gets picked up by Thursdays.
We are told that the City is looking for new contractors. Unfortunately, this year we are struggling with an enormous troop of baboons that spends three days tipping bins over in most streets.
The baboon saga is another story, but I would like to hear from City what is the plan going forward. It does not help that the wind spreads the rubbish all over the place.
Could Kommetjie not be a priority area while the baboons are around?
• The City’s media office responds: The City acknowledges the challenge with refuse collection in the area. This is largely a result of one of the contractors terminating their contract before implementation.
After the original contractor withdrew, other resources in the district had to be stretched to cover the shortfall. This capacity challenge is the root cause of delays.
The City is, however, in the process of appointing a replacement contractor by June 2024. This should resolve the ongoing delays if the procurement is successful.
The City regrets the inconvenience.
