Every now and then a remarkable talent, be that in sport, education or the arts, presents itself and simply has to be harnessed and developed to its fullest potential.
Young Simthembile Kwedana, known as Soso, is one such gem.
This Masiphumelele resident and Fish Hoek Primary School pupil has impressed on the rugby field.
His blistering pace, fearless commitment to the physical aspects of the game, passion and quiet demeanour has impressed his coaches, sponsors and supporters alike.
Soso lives with his parents and younger brother.
His mother’s employer, upon discovering his talent, assisted in getting him to Fish Hoek Primary School.
He also caught the eye of coaches at Wynberg Boys’ High School, who invited the young talent to join their rugby section in his Grade 7 year, arranging for transport to and from Noordhoek for practices and matches.
A strapping lad for his age, Soso’s positional path remains open.
He possesses the pace, agility and strength of an outside centre, somewhat reminiscent of Damien D’Allende, yet his mental and physical strength, combined with his skill indicate that he could yet migrate further forward on the pitch, perhaps to eighthman.
“I would normally have attended primary school in Masiphumelele,” says Soso, “but received an opportunity through a sponsor to attend Fish Hoek Primary where I am completing my final year.
“This opportunity has not just given me a better chance, not only with education but also a safer one. I also now have a chance to meet new people and develop as a person. It has also opened my mind to the life I want to create for myself”.
Soso has been given an opportunity to attend Wynberg Boys’ High School from next year.
However, he needs to raise the necessary funds.
Being a resident in the school’s hostel would not only negate the lengthy and expensive commute from Masiphumelele, it will immerse the young lad in the proud school environment.
Home to more than 900 pupils, Wynberg’s philosophy is set on Four Pillars – academics, culture, service and sport, ensuring every boy participates equally across all pillars so that at the end of their time they leave as well-rounded young men equipped for all aspects of life.
“Wynberg is a perfect fit for me as it has great academics, sport and a diverse cultural offering. I accepted gladly and proudly, acknowledging that this would be my single biggest achievement to date,” says Soso excitedly.
Truly indicative of this young man’s determination to succeed, Soso, with the help of some committed adults, have started a drive to raise the necessary funds to make these dreams a reality.
“A good education is my passport to making a difference for my family, now and for the generations that follow.”
